The Philadelphia Chapter of ASPE was established on April 26, 1979 with the intent to provide education to the plumbing design community. More than four (4) decades later, this tradition holds true more than ever. The Philly Chapter offers monthly dinner educational meetings to the three (3) state area (Delaware, south New Jersey and eastern Pennsylvania) that it services from September to May. Your board of directors (BOD), with oversight from The Society, meticulously chooses educational topics to bring design awareness and updated standards/code information on all areas of residential & commercial plumbing, fire protection, drainage systems, backflow prevention, pumping systems, medical gas and much, much more.
We recognize the need for education since schools don’t teach plumbing design. Most designers graduate with a degree in mechanical engineering. To further enhance our program, we offer a Plumbing I & II Design School. Each class, over a four (4) month period, on a weekly basis dives deep into specific topics, taught by instructors from the design community, manufactures and manufacturers reps. By the completion of each class, the student has been provided with the basics of plumbing design books and a comprehensive education on the standards/codes with working knowledge of the products they’ll be specifying for their projects.
Like any other society, we do strive to provide a mix and opportunity for networking and social events. Each year, we offer golf outings, cornhole tournaments, professional sporting events with specialty events that are geared to specific parts of our membership – Women of ASPE (WOA) and the Young Professional (those under 35 years of age). We conclude each year with a tour of a local manufacturing facility so the designers looking to grow their experiences will have the opportunity to see the manufacturing process first hand.
